Ceramic Coatings, What is it?

Let’s get started with what it’s not. Ceramic Coatings is not a maintenance free, rock chip repellent, scratch resistant coating that lasts forever and it is not a standard wax or sealant.

So, what is it? While ceramic coatings is an extra layer of protection from chemicals, bird droppings, bug splatters, harsh road salts and UV resistant.

This is a sacrificial layer of protection to your paint and will last from 1-5 years depending on what coating you choose and how well its maintained after the application is done.

Ceramic Coating Application Process

Applying ceramic coatings is seen as a “simple” process but requires lots of patience. It’s not a wax on wax off type application like traditional waxes or sealants. Waxes and sealants are pretty forgiving as you can apply them to the whole car and later come back to remove it.

Ceramic coatings have set work times meaning you need to understand the chemical bond as its happening so you can remove it in time before it becomes disastrous. You remove it too soon and the ceramic hasn’t fully bonded reducing the life of the coating. Now you leave it too long you have just created a much bigger problem filled with high spots which will require the process of compounding the panel back down to a smooth glass finish. The longer you leave the ceramic coating on the harder it is to fix.
